Mary Baker Eddy’s Science of Mind Healing

On this Sunday I explored some of my own theological roots, as well as connections between our own Transcendentalism and the New Thought movement of Christian Science.

One Response to Mary Baker Eddy’s Science of Mind Healing

  1. Suzanne says:

    Dear Brett:
We are new to FUUSA, and I just wanted to say thank you for your sermon on Mary Baker Eddy. The CS church was the only one I attended until I was college age. My mother left the church as soon as she went to college, never to return. However, I grew up going with my grandparents almost every Sunday. I appreciated your balanced account of Eddy’s life. It is my belief that if she lived today, Mary Baker Eddy would represent a classic case of bipolar disorder. She is one more example of how a strong personality and money (other people’s in this case) can deceive thousands of people. I know of too many people who experienced painful and life threatening situations as children in a CS household. This is child abuse, and I find it difficult to “honor” other people’s rights to do the same to their children. My thinking does not come from a lack of understanding Eddy’s work – The Science and Health, Prose Works, etc. Indeed, her long and almost incoherent sentences are the work of an unsound mind. I am grateful that as an adult I was able to shake this religion’s influence in my life. Once again, thank you for your sermon.
